LIBYA has given American beauty contestant Tecca Zendik citizenship and named her as honorary consul to the US. Libya has no diplomatic ties with the US and remains on the US list of states that sponsor terrorism.
"Libya is convinced Zendik will play a role in the service of relations with the US," Libyan news agency Jana quoted a foreign ministry spokesman as saying.
Zendik went to Tripoli in November as the US contestant in a beauty pageant, Miss Net World. The BBC reported that Zendik caught Gaddafi's eye during a tour of his home.
He verbally attacked the US, explaining how his home had been bombed by a US aircraft in 1986, killing two of his adopted children.
When Zendik burst into tears, he called her to his side to comfort her. The next day he sent her a watch on which his face is surrounded by diamonds.
